On February 18, 2020, Tukums Independent Newspaper published an interview organized by the Project Manager Inga Hoņavko with the manager of the Department of Spatial Planning of Riga Planning Region Rūdolfs Cimdiņš and Spatial Planning Specialist Sabīne Skudra.
Riga Planning Region is the region of the Capital of Latvia having put environment as one of the priorities of its strategic aims until 2030, including visions on regional economic, lifestyle and spatial development. The role of the planning regions is to be something in between a “matchmaker”, mediator and consultant for regional municipalities, creating cooperation platforms of different scale and format.
The seacoast stretching for 185 km along the Gulf of Riga has important role in Riga Planning Region. It is economically active space with ports, tourism and related services, but in the same time it is also dynamic environment subject to global, e.g., climate change. Seacoast is very special part of Latvia where spatial planning failures can become obvious in a very short time, reducing capability of natural coastal ecosystems to protect inland territories. Answers to the questions on the possible solutions to ensure sustainable development in these sensitive areas, as well as on integration of ecosystem services approach into spatial development can be found in the “Publications” section on the Project website.
